Kinnoull CSsR is about to re-open!...

kinnoull gardens2

After a 14 month refurbishment the Retreat and Pastoral Centre at Saint Mary's, Kinnoull, Perth is due to reopen in late August.

Kinnoull has served as a centre for retreats for clergy since 1870 and became a fully functioning Pastoral Centre in 1979.

Extensive work has been carried out, which includes a

complete renewal of the heating system,

49 rooms of which 34 en suite rooms are available.

These are newly furnished and available for retreats, conferences, meetings and times of recollection.

In addition the monastery is equipped with Wi-Fi throughout, and a good standard of catering is maintained.

There is step free access throughout the building with a lift

from the basement to the third floor.

You are invited to join the community who gather for

Morning and Evening Prayer and midday Mass

or simply to have a quiet time on your own.

Kinnoull is set in beautiful grounds with a panoramic view of the surrounding hills and its own woodland.

Fr Provincial CSsR writes July 2016...

20th July, 2016

Dear confreres and friends,

I trust that you celebrated the feast of the Holy Redeemer well. This time last year we were fairly certain we would be renewing our vows in Kinnoull. However the four of us present in the community renewed them here in Dundee, as we still have not moved back to Kinnoull. Various reasons are cited for the delay, including inclement weather which prevented removing the roof for the new lift shaft which goes from the basement to the top floor, the discovery of dry rot in several places, and challenges in the complete rewiring and re-plumbing of the building. The top three floors are now complete with carpets and there remains some work on the ground floor and lower ground floor. I believe that the wait is worth it, as we do not wish to return until everything is totally finished. The OPC made a visit this week and we are delighted with the quality of the work.

At the OPC meeting various situations in the Province and the Region were discussed and it was decided that we will do a visitation of the communities of the communities of the Province and of the Region in early 2017.

Fr John CSsR - A Golden Jubilarian...

john milcz cssr 50 1

Rev'd Fr John Milcz CSsR

FR JOHN MILCZ CSsR celebrated his Golden Jubilee of Ordination last weekend. As many of you read in the remarkable account of his early life in Lent Extra, John as a boy was taken prisoner and forcibly removed from his homeland by the Nazis. He survived the war and then served in both the Polish and British Armies before deciding to train for the priesthood here in England.

FR JOHN was joined by some of his Polish Relatives and by friends from around the UK.

The Redemptorists came to Liverpool in 1851 and the community of Bishop Eton has always treasured the fact that it received the first copy of the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour to leave Rome in 1866.

The archives of the community record that Fr Lammeus, Secretary General, had passed through Liverpool in the February of that year and the community was so captivated by the story of the icon about to be entrusted to the Congregation that it began a novena for Fr Hall, a member of the community who was seriously ill. As a result Fr Hall was miraculously cured and in due course Bishop Eton provided the compensation paid to the Augustinian Fathers.

Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Reflections

In the run up to the 2016 Novena, Fr Tim Buckley approached the local junior and secondary schools and to invite them to participate in the event. The chaplain of St. Julies, Mike Anderson produced a series of reflections that would be used within the school and on the walk of witness that St. Julie's and St Francis Xavier college undertook on the 22nd June.

Mike has kindly agreed that the videos can be shared, and you will find them below.

150 years CSsR and Icon of Perpetual Succour...

A Notre Dame Sister wrote the following article about the great Province Jubilee Mass that was celebrated in St Mary's Clapham on the 2nd July 2016. Afterwards there were further celebrations in the monastery garden.

Jubilee Mass

A Jubilee Mass in honour of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour was held in the Redemptorist Church of St. Mary’s Clapham, on Saturday 2nd. July 2016.  The Principal Celebrant was Bishop Ralph Heskett CSsR, in the presence of His Eminence Vincent Cardinal Nichols.  It was to commemorate the event when 150 years ago Pope Pius IX entrusted the Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour to the Redemptorists with the instruction, “Make her known”.  The original Icon is venerated in the Church of St. Alphonsus in Rome which is the titular Church of Cardinal Vincent Nichols.  The very first copy of it was placed in Bishop Eton Monastery in Liverpool.

Friends and parishioners from all parts of the British Isles joined the celebration, and I joined the coach from Bishop Eton.  The journey took 5 hours 30 minutes (with stop) each way, and I never noticed the time passing!

The whole service was introduced by the Very Rev. Fr. Ronald McAinch CSsR and it was good to see him looking so well after what he described to me was a 9 month serious illness.

We were inspired by the homily given by Fr. Richard Reid CSsR Rector and Vicar Provincial, introducing us to the stories connected with the introduction and following devotion to the Icon installed in their Lady Chapel, and the final Address given by Cardinal Vincent Nichols.  He told us the story of how his Mother described the Icon to him when he was a little lad, and flowing from it, how his love of our Lady under that title grew.

The singing was vigorous as the church was packed, but the two simple hymns sung by 3 rows of 6 year olds from St. Mary’s, who from the front benches turned to face the congregation, was delightful!

The weather was kind to us, and we enjoyed a ‘garden party’ afterwards where many people renewed old friendships and also made new ones, and where I met Sr. Pat Ellen.

The whole day was one of thanksgiving and blessings.  I loved the INCLYTA – (sung  by the Redemptorist priests only) so I finish with the first verse which we can pray too;

Noble and devoted Virgin,

Look down on us O Mary protect our life,

direct our actions.

Making her known - in Liverpool

In 1866 Pope Pius IX entrusted the Icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Succour instructing them to make her known.  In the run up to the 2016 Novena in Liverpool much thought was given to how the Icon could best be brought to the attention of the local community and in particular the school children.
