This year we want to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the episcopal ordination of our founder St. Alphonsus Liguori with a series of articles. Our first efforts will center around the “statistical information” while later reports will attempt to put Alphonsus’ episcopal ministry into a Redemptorist pastoral context.
Last month we mentioned that since St. Alphonsus, there have been 152 Redemptorists ordained bishops for service to the Church. Of those 153, fifty-two are presently living. This month we wish to honor these confreres in the vineyard of the Lord.
Among this group of 52 are: 1 Cardinal – The Cardinal Archbishop of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia and a Papal elector; 10 Archbishops and 41 bishops. All Redemptorist bishops, with the exception of one, are or were ordinaries of apostolic vicariates, prelacies, dioceses and archdioceses or auxiliary bishops. The one exception is Archbishop Tobin who serves as the #2 man in the Vatican Congregation for Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.
There are 11 Redemptorist bishops from the Conference of Europe; 9 from the Conference of North America; 24 from the Conference of Latin America and the Caribbean; 5 from the Conference of Asia-Oceania; and 3 from the Conference of Africa and Madagascar . Brazilians number the most Redemptorist bishops - 10. Canada has 6 and the Ukraine 5 – these 11 bishops belong to the Greek-Catholic Rite, which has a married clergy but their bishops are required to be from the ranks of celibate priests, making our confreres a convenient source. It was from the ranks of the Greek-Catholic Church that during the communist era in Eastern Europe, 2 Ukrainian Redemptorist bishops, Vasyl Velychkovsky and Nicholas Charnetsky, were imprisoned, tortured and martyred –as well as 3 Redemptorist priests -- and subsequently have been declared Blessed by the Church. We also have a bishop in the Chaldean Rite in Iraq and 2 serving Slovakian Greek-Catholics, one in Slovakia, the other, American-born, serves in Canada.
Like St. John Neumann, a Bohemian who was Bishop of Philadelphia, there are a number of Redemptorists who minister far from the lands of their birth, having first served as Redemptorists in mission areas. 3 Polish Redemptorist bishops, for example, head local Churches in South America. A Canadian-born Redemptorist now serves the Greek-Catholic Rite faithful in Melbourne, Australia, and a Redemptorist from England is bishop of the flock on the Rock of Gibraltar!
Following is a list of these confreres. They are arranged according to their age, oldest to youngest, along with their nationality, Redemptorist unit, years of episcopal service and the service they are presently engaged in. Pray for them. All of them, although technically outside of Redemptorist life now, never really lose their Redemptorist heart and identity. At the end of their service, like St. Alphonsus, many return to Redemptorist community life to finish out their years:
Look out for our own Bishop Ralph C.Ss.R. (London Province)!
