Dear Confreres and Friends,

During the past month we have had the AGM of Redemptorist Publications, and also the Redemptorist Publications Trustees Committee meeting, and I am happy to report that despite enormous difficulties in the Religious media market, we are at present holding our own. Obviously investigations into electronic media continue and well as the launching of new products later in the year.

On the formation front, our three Postulants will be participating in a Mission at Erdington Abbey this coming week, and then hope to advance to the Novitiate which will be in Canada, and begins at the end of July. In Zimbabwe, seven men have applied for first Vows and four are in Rome as part of their preparation for final Vows. Two are due for priestly ordination in July.

The first meeting of the Conference of Europe took place in Vienna during the month. It was a short working period in which commissions, secretariats and working groups were set up. It was recognised that much more work needs to be done before the Conference can be up and running. Further meetings are planned for later in the year when nominations will be made to the General Government for the position of the Conference Co-ordinator.

You may also have noted from the Catholic media, that the Holy See has announced the names of those responsible for the Apostolic Visitation in Ireland. Our Superior General Emeritus, Fr. Joe Tobin, is one of those named, and I ask your prayers for him and for the team. It appears to be an excellent and sensitive group.

Birthdays this month are Fr Hone on 2nd (we celebrated with him) and Fr Tom Molloy on the 18th.

Last month there was a typographical error when I announced the convocation of the next Provincial Chapter. In order to be canonically safe, I make the announcement again. I take this opportunity, in accordance with Statute 0146, to formally convoke the next Provincial Chapter to commence on 3rdJanuary 2011. The place and duration of the Chapter as well as the composition of the Preparatory Commission will be discussed by the EPC on 13thJune.

From Cardinal Newman for this month, there is the recommendation of two short works: “The Mind of Cardinal Newman”, by Stephen Dessain, and “John Henry Newman” by Louise Caldecott. And here is a prayer attributed to Newman for this month of the Sacred Heart.

‘O Sacred Heart of Jesus, living and quickening source of eternal life, infinite treasure of the Divinity, and burning furnace of divine love. You are my refuge and my sanctuary, O my amiable Saviour. Consume my heart with that burning fire with which Your Heart is ever inflamed. Pour down on my soul those graces which flow from Your love, and let my heart be so united with Yours, that our wills may be one; and mine in all things, be conformed to Yours. May Your divine will be equally the standard and rule of all my desires and of all my actions’.

Fr R  Heskett is due to move from the Province to Gibraltar this month, and I ask you to keep him in your prayers as he prepares for his Ordination on 10thJuly. We are immensely grateful, as stated in a previously, for his great contribution to the life of the Province and to Formation in these days.

 In Christ the Redeemer,

Ronald J. McAinsh, C.Ss.R.

Provincial Superior
