An insight into Bishop Elect Msgr Raymond Mupa, C.Ss.R

Fr Raymond T. Mupa, C.Ss.R was born in Masvingo on the 28th of April 1970. In 1990 he joined the Archdiocese of Harare and began initial formation in Chimanimani under Fr Kapito and Fr Christopher Ndlovu (now Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Harare) among others.

After a year in Chimanimani, he went to Chishawasha Regional Seminary where he completed three years of philosophy. In 1994, he went for a pastoral year at All Souls Mission in Mutoko followed by theological studies at Chishawasha Regional Seminary.

In 1996, when he had just started his second year of theology, he joined the Redemptorist congregation. In 1997, he was sent to South Africa for Noviciate. After his return, he received his First Vows on the 21st of February 1998. He made his final profession in December 2000. He then got ordained as deacon followed by his ordination to the priesthood on the 4th of August in 2001.

Soon after his ordination in 2001, Fr Raymond Mupa served Mabvuku and Tafara Parishes as an assistant to Fr Ronald J. McAish until 2005. He was transferred to St Gerard’s Church Borrowdale to take over as parish priest. In 2007, he went to study moral theology at the Alphonsianum University in Rome where he obtained a licentiate in moral theology.

On his return in 2010, he became parish priest of Mabvuku. During that time he was also student prefect at St Alphonsus as well as a lecture of moral theology and canon law at Chishawasha Seminary and Holy Trinity College. He has passion for teaching and continued this role up to this day. Between 2014 and 2015 he was also the vice-rector of Holy Trinity College. Fr Mupa served Mabvuku up to 2014 when he became the Regional Superior of the Region of Zimbabwe.

Fr Mupa is currently the Superior of Holy Redeemer House and the Parish Priest of Chiweshe and St Gerard’s Parish (incorporating St Gerard, Immaculate Conception, St Cecilia and St Augustine).

Some of the interesting trivial details of his life are that as an assistant to Fr McAinsh, Fr Mupa did a lot of work with the youth. He popularised Wednesday youth gatherings, promoted youth involvement in church activities (particularly the Sunday mass). He also engaged youth through celebrations of birthdays and various other celebrations. In addition he introduced marimba instruments and other modern instruments into the youth mass to make it vibrant. Apart from work with the youth he had passion for the sick whom he visited regularly. Towards the end of 2005 when there was Operation Clean Up (Murambatsvina) he played a crucial role in helping to relocate the people whose homes had been destroyed.

From 2010 to 2014, as parish priest he continued work with the youth. He was also involved with the renovation of the church, putting a new pavement on the church grounds and the refurbished the hall.
