(Rome) Cardinal Joseph William Tobin CSsR, Archbishop of Newark in the United States is among the members of the Pontifical Council for Culture who were appointed by the Holy Father on 11 November 2019.

The Pontifical Council for Culture is the Dicastery of the Roman Curia that supports the Pope, in what concerns the encounter between the Gospel and the cultures and relations of the Church and of the Holy See with the world of culture. The objective is to revive a sincere dialogue so that the representatives of science, literature, and art will feel recognized by the Church as authentic seekers of the true, the good and the beautiful.

The Pontifical Council for Culture is divided into three sections: Faith and Culture, Dialogue with Cultures, and Cultural Heritage, which pursue the tasks of the three previous bodies.

Members of the Council, cardinals, bishops and leading cultural figures attend the Plenary, represent the Dicastery on important occasions and oversee other activities, being appointed by the Holy Father for five-year terms.
