October 5, 2013

Dear Confreres, Sisters and Friends:

Greetings from Rome. I would like to remind you that on Saturday, October 5, we celebrate the memory of our confrere, Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, C.Ss.R. He was a gifted spiritual guide and confessor, a gentle and wise formator, and a zealous pastor and preacher. During this year of the Redemptorist Missionary Vocation, may his example and prayers inspire all of us to follow the Redeemer more closely.

Your brother in the Redeemer,
Michael Brehl, C.Ss.R.

First Class Student...

Congratulations to one of our professed students for success in his studies. Br. Peter Morris was awarded First Class Honours for the Bachelor of Divinity programme at Heythrop College, the highest award given for the course.

I'm very relieved to have completed the work for the qualification and I am grateful for being awarded so generously. I have enjoyed my time at Heythrop very well. The academic atmosphere of the college has been refreshing, combining good attention to magisterial teaching – especially to the documents of the Second Vatican Council – with rigorous academic enquiry.

I also had the chance to mix with students from other religious orders and seminarians from the local seminary, Allen Hall. Those encounters were a real gift to me.

Br. Peter Morris C.Ss.R

Br Peter is set to begin his pastoral experience in Zimbabwe in September. Having spent nine years of his life studying at university level, he looks forward to having a break from the books.

Well done, Br Peter!

Conference of Redemptorists in Europe...

Formators from all of Europe met in Cracow...

For the first time in our history the formators (Vocations Directors, Postulant Directors, Novice Masters, Prefects of Students) from all the units of our Congregation in southern and northern Europe met for a very successful and enjoyable meeting. The group assembled from Dublin to Lviv and from Southern Italy to Scotland and were about 35 confreres. The youngest father was 29 and the oldest was 75 years. So there was much energy and much wisdom!

Vocations Homily

Preached at all the masses at Bishop Eton

on Vocations Sunday April 2013

I am now wearing a different hat because I stand before you, not as the Rector of Bishop Eton, but as the Vocations Director of the Redemptorists of the London Province – a fancy title or what?

Today is that wonderful day when we pray for vocations all over the world – so it doesn’t matter where you are today – you might be in Timbuktu or Childwall – we are all today focused and praying for vocations to the priesthood and the religious life.

Unapologetically, I stand here to speak about the wonder of this vocation. I know that many of you have found your vocation in life and that it is sacred and precious to you and I celebrate them also, but today I want to speak specifically about the religious, the priestly or the consecrated vocation.

I want to begin by first of all telling you something of my vocation story, which I think this is an important thing for a vocations director to do.

I should be clear right from the beginning and tell you that I had no intention of ever joining the Redemptorists. I did however want to become a priest and planned on doing that in my home diocese. When I was a boy I thought my diocese at home was great – and I still think that now all these years later. It’s a bit like this archdiocese; it’s a great diocese. In the diocese they have wonderful people, wonderful priests and over the years they’ve had wonderful bishops. So I was going to join my home diocese in Scotland, or so I thought.

Postulants Day Out!...

The Postulants in Liverpool, Royston Price and Michael Taylor, accompanied by Fr Richard Reid CSsR went on a day out recently that was not to be forgotten; lots of interesting things, including the Papal Preacher!

The intention of the trip was to visit the site in North Wales that is considered to be the "Lourdes of Wales" by the local signage department. The place for our pilgrimage was the Well of St Winefride's Well - "the only such place in Britain with a continuous history of public pilgrimage for over 13 centuries."

Slovakian Deacon Joseph CSsR...

In Clapham there is a young Slovakian confrere working with the community there on the parish. Br Jozef CSsR (26years old) is in Clapham for one month, after which he will return to Slovakia to make the final preparations for his priestly ordination.

deaconjoseph

Read on to find out from Br Jozef himself!

"I am Jozef Mihok, a Redemptorist deacon of the Viceprovince of Bratislava in Slovakia.  From 12th of February untill 10th March I will stay at St. Mary's Clapham in order to get some pastoral experience.  Here, at the parish in London, I have the opportunity to help at the "ACE of Clubs" which is a centre for homeless people; to work at the secondary school and at Holy Trinity Hospice. It is a great joy and encougarement for me to see my confreres of the London province proclaim "plentiful redemption" in so many ways of pastoral care. I am thankful for the opportunity to stay with them and to learn from them.

Please, keep me in your prayer as I am preparing for my ordination to priesthood in June. Thank you!"
