The special meeting convoked by Pope Leo XIV to deepen the pastoral relevance of Amoris Laetitia got under way at the Aula Paolo VI on 7th October 2026. This meeting entitled «Ten Years after Amoris Laetitia: Proclaiming the Gospel with Families Today» is attended by the Presidents of the Episcopal Conferences from all over the world and the heads of the  Eastern Catholic Churches. It will continue till 14th October when the Pope himself will preside over the Eucharistic celebration to be held at St.Peter’s Square.

There are three Redemptorists participating at this meeting, namely, Cardinal Joseph Tobin, CSsR who is invited as one of the special guests of the Pope, Bishop Raymond Mupa, CSsR, the President of the Episcopal Conference of Zimbabwe, and the Sri Lankan Redemptorist Fr. Vimal Tirimanna, CSsR. Altogether, there are some 150 participants among whom are some 22 married lay people from the five continents. The latter are expected to share their first-hand experiences on family life and marriage regarding various aspects lived by the married couples in the contemporary world.

According to the Letter of Invitation dated 19th March 2026, which was sent by the Pope to all the Episcopal Conferences, the main aim highlighted was to deepen the teachings of Amoris Laetitia according to the ever-changing signs of the times. Accordingly, one of the fundamental questions that will be addressed by this special meeting will be to explore how to renew pastoral ministry with vigour and make families increasingly active participants in the life and mission of the Church in the contemporary world. The meeting intends to examine new paths, born of listening and discernment with regard to the pastoral care of families, especially those in difficulties.

Fr. Tirimanna who teaches moral theology at our Pontifical Accademia Alfonsiana in Rome  is among those theologians appointed jointly by Vatican’s Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life and the Dicastery for the Synod of Bishops to be among the group of «expert theologians» for this special meeting. Another Professor of the Alphonsianum, Fr. Giovanni del Missier is also among the members of the same group of «expert theologians».
