Pope Francis’ fourth encyclical, Dilexit Nos – He Loved Us...
Cardinal Vincent Nichols says,
“I welcome the remarkable Letter published today by Pope Francis.
“It speaks eloquently of the love of God for every person. It speaks the language of the heart, a language known to all who love, who yearn, who feel pain, who know loneliness. It speaks of the heart of Jesus, both fully human and filled with the infinite, divine love of the Creator for every person.
“This Letter speaks eloquently of the ceaseless yearning of the heart of Jesus for us to allow his love to fill our hearts and find in him our way home, to the Father. It speaks of the Holy Spirit of God, the fire of love, holding our hearts and guiding us into the fulness of life.
“The invitation of this Letter is clear: let anyone who is broken-hearted, or feeling empty of heart, or yearning for love, or filled with the joy of a loving heart, come and read this Letter. It is, quite simply, addressed to us all."
“This is the testimony of Pope Francis, a testimony written in his heart and offered to the hearts of all.”

Online meeting of the Brothers with Father General...

On the eve of the feast of Saint Gerard Majella, Father Rogério Gomes, Superior General, met online with more than 150 brothers from the various units of our Redemptorist Congregation. During the meeting, Father General shared a reflection on the vocation of the religious brother. Among other things, he said:
“The identity of the religious brother consists in a free and conscious vocation to consecrated life, as a response to Baptism, which is distinguished by the call to live brotherhood and service to others, embodying the presence of Christ among the People of God, especially among the neediest. The mission of the brother is, first of all, a commitment to service in the construction of a Christian community, where hierarchical roles do not measure human value, but by a spirit of sharing, acceptance and solidarity.”
Father Rogério Gomes recalled that “being a Redemptorist brother involves a wide range of activities that are in line with our charism. The professionalization of the brothers is essential in different areas, such as social work, law, psychology, communication, nursing and administration, among others. However, this should not become an imperative. (…) I believe that Saint Gerard is a good example for us and can teach us to be Redemptorist missionaries based on simplicity, deep spirituality and the encounter with others, without distinction of persons.
Father General thanked the brothers for their testimony of life and for their dedication to the Redemptorist mission, which is based on the announcement of abundant redemption to the poorest and most marginalized, following the example of Jesus Christ. He said:
“You, faithful to the mission of announcing the Good News to those most in need, are a living sign of God’s redeeming love in the world. We recognize with gratitude the pastoral and missionary work they carry out, especially in popular missions, sanctuaries, parishes, spirituality centres, sacristies, social projects and migration centres. In these places, they promote human dignity, hospitality and justice, always guided by a spirit of brotherhood and service, where their presence heals many wounds and strengthens the faith of many. The Redemptorist brothers, with their testimony of a simple and committed life, are missionaries of hope, following in the footsteps of the Redeemer, and must be a living reminder of him also for the clergy.”
The meeting also created a space for fraternal sharing among the participants.

On 29th of September, the whole church commemorated the World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2024. Pope Francis chose the theme as, “God walking with his people.” In his message, the Holy Father reminds us that all of us, God’s people, are migrants on this earth, on our way to the “true homeland”, the Kingdom of Heaven.
When we, the Redemptorist family celebrate the feast of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos we reflect his life and mission to immigrants as well. What we know ultimately about Blessed Seelos is that he came across people of immigrants living in poverty, sickness, homelessness, and rejection. He faced this desolation with hope, not despair. He did not abandon them. He brought Christ’s love to the people without hope. He worked to ease the burdens of so many exploited and marginalized people. Unlike most of the great saints, Francis was not a prominent prelate, mystic, or martyr. He did not write any significant text or stand out for his theology. Rather, his contribution was recorded in the lives of individuals, who received direct and personal help in their daily needs. Father Seelos is a model of simplicity and dedication to the service of God and others. He pointed out the way to God through the daily events of life.

A REDEMPTORIST MONASTERY IN SCOTLAND
And the Man Who Helped It
ST. MARY'S, KINNOULL, 1869-1929
Queen Victoria, on one of her progresses to Scotland half a century or more ago, noticed on a wooded hill near Perth, overlooking the valley of the Tay, a picturesque and somewhat medieval looking building which had not been there when she last passed that way. 'What was it?' asked her observant Majesty; and the reply she received was that it was— not a new Redemptorist monastery (which might have been a slight shock), but ‘some kind of reformatory.’

A Life Hidden From the World
'A very good name for it, too,' said the Superior, when he heard the story and passed it on to me. Father Edmund Vaughan, first Rector of St. Mary's, Kinnoull Hill, was one of the- remarkable group of brothers, Vaughans of Courtfield all, who were distinguished and prominent in the Catholic Church of mid-Victorian days, just as their nephews were in a later generation. '''
The Redemptorist Congregation was already, in those far-off days, doing a great work for souls — its own chosen and peculiar work — under the ardent leadership of an apostolic Provincial, destined later to rule the See of Southwark. And what enabled them, under God, to extend that work, and to establish it firmly in at least four different countries, was the munificence of a hidden benefactor. I call him 'hidden' because he had already himself worn the Redemptorist habit for twenty years, and had long lived a truly hidden life in the house of his Order which he had himself founded in Rome.
Sixty Years of Mission Effort
The monastery of Kinnoull, looking down from its wooded eminence on the ancient town of St. John, now Perth, is, I am glad to see, about to celebrate the diamond jubilee of its foundation.
All Scottish Catholics will thank God for the sixty fruitful years, of labor for Him and His Church done during that long period by the devoted sons of St. Alphonsus. And not a few, I hope, will remember, in their prayers and thanks givings, Edward Douglas, to whom that great Order, and those to whom it ministers, owes so much.
